The Roma Background to My Work

I am Bulgarian Roma, and I live and work in Varna, by the Black Sea. I have drawn for most of my life, and my psychic readings and my drawings developed together. Those are the plain facts of who I am. In this post I want to say something about what it means to carry a background into your work, without turning it into a performance or a story I have dressed up for a website.

Why I keep this short and honest

A background is easy to turn into decoration, and I do not want to do that with mine. I am one person, and I can only speak for my own life and work. I will not tell you what all Roma believe or practise, and I will not invent customs or history to make my studio sound more interesting.

So I am going to stay with what is true and simple. My background is part of me. It is present in my work the way anyone's origins are present in what they make: quietly, in the background, shaping attention and care rather than announcing itself. If you want the short version of my story in one place, the page about me as a Bulgarian Roma psychic artist in Varna sets it out.

Carrying a background into work

Every artist brings where they come from into the room with them. It shows in what they notice, what they take seriously, what they will not rush. For me, my background is less a subject I draw and more a ground I stand on while I draw. It is part of why I treat this work with respect, why I make every piece myself, and why I am careful about what I promise people.

I think of it the way you might think of an accent. You do not choose it each morning. It is simply there in how you speak. My background is there in how I hold a pencil and how I sit with a question someone has sent me. I do not need to point at it constantly for it to be real.

At the same time, I do not want anyone to buy a drawing from me because of an idea about Roma people. I want you to come for the work itself. The drawings are the evidence. If they speak to you, that is the right reason to order one.

What sits around me in the studio

The photographs on my homepage show the material around my work, and I am happy to describe it, because it is ordinary and real. On my desk there are sketchbooks of faces and studies. There is a notebook of hand-drawn symbols, marks that have come to me while working, kept together so I can see them side by side. There are old family photographs. There is a traditional medallion. And outside, there is Varna and the Black Sea.

I will not tell you stories about these objects. They are not props, and I do not want to make them into a legend. They are simply what is near me when I work. Anyone who works at one desk gathers what matters to them around it, and these are the things that matter to me. They keep me company while the pencil moves.

The notebook of symbols is perhaps the most direct link between my surroundings and my drawings. Over time I have learned that certain marks return, and keeping them on paper helps me recognise them when they appear again. Some of them find their way into the corners of a portrait or into the shape of a face.

Living and working by the Black Sea

Varna is where I am based, and every drawing and reading I send leaves from here. I read for people in other countries, and the work travels to them by email. I like that a drawing made at a desk in Varna can reach someone far away the same day it is finished.

I mention the sea because it is part of where I am based, not because I want to make it symbolic. It is simply the place around the work, and I would rather name it plainly than turn it into a postcard.

How drawing and reading grew together

I cannot separate my drawing from my psychic work, because they did not develop separately. Faces, marks and symbols often appear while I am drawing, and the drawing is how I follow them. Over many years, the two practices shaped each other until they became one way of working.

That is why, when I make a Future Partner Portrait, it is a drawing and a reading at once. I draw in pencil the face of the person I sense coming toward you, and I write a short note of my impressions: who they seem to be, their initials, and how you may meet. It is USD 29, and I complete it within 48 hours, sending you a digital image of the finished pencil drawing by email. You can add your name and a short note about your relationship question if you would like to, though that context is optional.

A portrait like this is a creative spiritual offering for reflection. It is not a prediction about a real person's choices, and I would never claim otherwise.

What my background does not mean

Because people sometimes arrive with assumptions, I want to name a few limits clearly. Being Roma does not make my readings more certain than anyone else's. It does not give my drawings special authority. It does not mean I follow a particular tradition that I would describe to you here. What I offer is my own practice, made carefully by hand, with honesty about what it can and cannot do.

My Etsy record shows 706+ sales and 292 reviews over three years, rated 4.9. I share those numbers because they are facts about the work, not about my origins.

Where to read more

If you would like to know more about me, the about page gives an overview of my work and my studio. The page on what a psychic artist does explains how drawing and reading come together in practice. And the Bulgarian Roma psychic artist in Varna page brings the facts of my background together with the work I offer.

Wherever you are writing from, the work begins the same way: a pencil, a quiet desk in Varna, and my attention on your question.
